Abstract

The value of the assessment centre: a reply. Kriek's negative evaluation of Pietersen's (1990) review of the predictive value of the assessment centre is responded to. Based on low variances obtained in the review, a more comprehensive approach to the study of managerial behaviour was recommended by the latter. Inaccuracies and selective referencing in Kriek's (1991) exposition are identified and discussed. A fundamental discrepancy in Kriek's view of the scientific status of the assessment centre is also briefly discussed. It is concluded that both authors acknowledge the utility of the assessment centre, but differ with regard to its explanatory value.

Opsomming
Repliek word gelewer op Kriek (1991) se kritiese beoordeling van Pietersen (1990) waarin laasgenoemde, op grond van lae voorspellings variansiesyfers vir die takseersentrum, 'n meer omvattende benadering tot die bestudering van bestuursgedrag bepleit. Onakkuraathede en selektiewe verwysings in Kriek (1991) word in besonderhede bespreek en reggestel. Verder word 'n grondliggende teenstrydighede in Kriek se bespreking van die wetenskaplike bewesenheid van die takseersentrum kortliks ook in oënskou geneem. Die gevolgtrekking word gemaak dat beide outeurs ooreenstem betreffende hulle siening van die bruikbaarheid van die takseersentrum, maar verskil met betrekking tot die gedragsverklaringswaarde daarvan.
